Virtual reality is one of the most anticipated latest technology to hit the market in the succeeding years. It is predicted that it will become more popular than television by year 2025. Over the last few years, several companies have invested in the development of the virtual reality and as time passes by, more and more people are realizing the entertainment value that virtual reality can bring.
In relation to this, things are looking good for Google’s own VR product, Google Cardboard.
The vice president reported that millions of Cardboard units have been delivered to various places and millions of application installations have also been purchased from Google Playstore. 360 videos posted in YouTube were also watched for more than 350,000 hours by viewers.
However, Google has not always been popular when it comes to selling gadgets. One may remember how Google Glass did not return much profit when it became available to the public. As for the Google Cardboard, only a million units was sold when New York Times released the NYT VR app in November 2015.
The release of the Google Cardboard posed certain questions regarding how people will receive and react to it. The main concern of experts was that the lack of sensors could cause sickness and they also argued that 360 videos were in fact, not real virtual reality. Basically, what Google Cardboard offers is virtual reality experience that is lower in quality and in some cases, may confuse people.
However, improvements made on the device changes the perception of these experts especially when Google Cardboard showed an improved SDK and smoothness during playback. The tracking capabilities as well as the inclusion of the YouTube app had also made the use of Google Cardboard more exciting.
Yet, even with improvements, Google Cardboard still lacks some things that are only offered by high end VRs. For example, Google Cardboards do not have 3D audio and immersive visuals. This can pose a setback particularly for those who are looking for more quality VRs.
Whatever the outcome maybe, the main challenge for Cardboard is how can it penetrate the everyday routines of people. As of today, some companies are using the Cardboards to promote their brands or services.
THE FUTURE OF CARBOARD IN GOOGLE
News have spread out that Google has now formed a team specifically assigned to VR program. With this, people are more or less assured that the company is trying to do something more when it comes to virtual reality and the use of Cardboard.
Also, it is not impossible that in the near future, Cardboard will not be solely made with cardboard. The recently released Cardboard 2.0 features some improvements regarding its assembly. Google also announced about Google Jump camera array, an improved SDK, and additional platforms for other video formats. Rumor also has it that a successor to Cardboard will be released by Google which is complete with new lenses and built in Android operating system. If that is true, then Google will be competing with Samsung’s Gear VR which is also made for mobile phone use.
In Phoenix they are using Live Streaming virtual reality technology.
